Vertrek vanaf Agulhas

Die span kom saam met vriende en familie bymekaar by die mees suidelike punt van die Afrika vasteland. Die ses manne vertrek en reis noord – eerste bestemming: Rhodes - aan die hange van die Maluti’s. Onderweg veroorsaak ʼn helikopter ongeluk byna ʼn vroeë einde aan die beplande reis van 20 000 km.

Departure from Agulhas

The team gathers with friends and family for a departure from the southernmost tip on the African continent. The six guys travel north with Rhodes on the slopes of the Maluti’s as their first destination. En route a helicopter crash nearly caused a premature end to the proposed 20 000 km journey.

Oor Sanipas na Pafuri

Die Hooglande van Lesotho is 4x4 paradys. Die span reis tot by Sani Top, vandaar af met Sanipas. Hulle gaan kuier by Jan Staal  by Amersfoort en vorder dan tot by Pafuri waar daar skaapkop en askoek op die spyskaart is vir aandete.

From Sani Pass to Pafuri

The Highlands of Lesotho is 4x4 paradise. The team travels to Sani Top. From there it is down Sani Pass. They visit motorbike expert Jan Staal near Amersfoort, and then travel to Pafuri where sheep head and griddle bread is on the supper menu.

Met die Limpopovallei na Inhambane

Die span reis met die Limpopo tot by die see. Vandaar is dit noord, na Inhambane. Verblyf is aan die noordelike oewer van die meer  by Linga-Linga. Daar is ook ʼn besoek aan die ou Portugese nedersetting -  ʼn vakansie bestemming vir talle Suid-Afrikaners.

Down the Limpopo Valley to Inhambane

The team travels down the Limpopo Valley to the coast and from there to Linga-Linga on the northern shores of the Inhambane estuary. They also visit the quaint Portuguese settlement which has become a popular holiday destination for many South Africans.

Van Linga-Linga na Vilanculos

Linga-Linga bied die ideale geleentheid vir diepsee hengel. Die manne vang ʼn pragtige seilvis. Daarna is dit verder op teen die kus om die Bazaruto eilandgroep te verken en te gaan soek na die skaars dugong, die meerminne van weleer.

From Linga-Linga to Vilanculos

Linga-Linga offers the ideal opportunity for deep sea fishing, and the guys manage to catch a beautiful sail fish. They then travel along the coast to visit the Bazaruto archipelago and search for the illusive dugong, the mermaids of yesteryear.

Gorongosa – die verlore paradys

Gorongosa was eens die juweel van Afrika se wildreservate, maar die dekades lange burgeroorlog het veroorsaak dat daar teen die negentiger jare bykans geen wild oor was nie. Die Park is stadig maar seker besig om te herstel tot sy eertydse glorie.

Gorongosa – the lost paradise

Gorongosa once was the jewel of game parks in Africa, but the decades long civil war decimated the place, leaving virtually no wild life by the end of the 1990’s. Slowly but surely the park is regaining its former glory.

Tiervisse by Cahora Bassa

Cahora Bassa, Afrika se vierde grootste dam, is ʼn ongerepte paradys in ʼn wildernis en een van die gewildste plekke in suidelike Afrika om tiervis te vang. Die span besoek ook die hidro-elektriese kragstasie – ʼn ingenieurswonder in die Zambezi vallei

Tiger fish at Cahora Bassa

Cahora Bassa is Africa’s fourth largest reservoir, located in a wilderness area. This is one of the prime tiger fishing spots in southern Africa. The team also pays a visit to the hydro electrical plant on the Zambezi river – a massive engineering feat.

Die Boere van Mkushi

Die reis na Zambië gaan eers verby Lusaka, maar vandaar na die boeregemeenskap van Mkushi. Talle Suid Afrikaners het hulle reeds in die land kom vestig en is besig met reuse landbou aktiwiteite.

The farmers of Mkushi

Travelling north to Zambia, the team first pay a visit to Lusaka and then travels to the farming community of Mkushi. Many South African farmers have settled in the area and practice farming on a massive scale.

Op soek na die skoenbek

Die moeras van Bangweulu is om twee redes bekend – dit is waar die Skotse sendeling David Livingstone gesterf het en waar mens naby die letchwe vlaktes nog die rare skoenbek kan sien. Dit is ʼn uitsonderlike voël waarvan die getalle in die onlangse verlede dramaties afgeneem het.

In search of the shoebill

The Bangweulu Wetlands is known for two things – this is where the Scottish missionary David Livingstone died, and this is where the rare shoebill is to be found near the letchwe plain. The numbers of this strange bird dwindled severely in the recent past.

Die MV Liemba

Die Liemba vaar reeds vir bykans 100 jaar op die Tanganjikameer. ʼn Vaart van Mpulungu in Zambië tot by Kigoma in Tanzanië duur bykans drie dae. Met die vertrek van die Voetsporespan uit Zambië was hulle voertuie,  saam met sowat 250 passasiers, die enigste vrag aan boord. Met die aankoms in Kigoma was daar sowat 200 ton vrag en 650 passasiers aan boord.

The MV Liemba

The MV Liemba has been sailing for close to a century on Lake Tanganyika. The journey from Mpulungu in Zambia to Kigoma in Tanzania takes approximately 3 days. When the Voetspore team departed on the boat in Mpulungu their 3 vehicles and 200 passengers were the only freight on board. By the time they reached Kigoma there were 200 tons of freight and 650 passengers on board.

Sjimpansees in Nyungwe

Rwanda is die digsbevolkte land in Afrika, maar is ook die tuiste van verskeie aapspesies. Afgesien van die wêreldberoemde berg gorillas is daar ook die sjimpansees in die Nyungwe woud in die suide van die land. Die Voetsporespan het gaan loop in die Voetspore van die sjimpansees.

Rwanda is the most populous country in Africa, but also the country with the widest variety of primates. Apart from the world famous mountain gorillas, the country also hosts chimpanzees in the Nyungwe Forest in the south of the country. The Voetspore team went chimpanzee trekking.

Nalatenskap van ʼn Volksmoord

Gedurende die Volksmoord van 1994 is daar in Rwanda bykans 1 miljoen mense vermoor. Die nalatenskap is vandag nog duidelik dwars oor die land te sien. “Nooit weer nie!”, is die kreet wat oral opgaan. Vanaf die land reis die manne na die wonderlike ondeurdringbare woud in Uganda.

Legacy of Genocide

During the Genocide of 1994 approximately one million people were murdered in Rwanda. The legacy of the event is evident across the country with the slogan “Never Again!” , all over to be seen. From Rwanda the team advance to the incredible Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

Die Queen Elizabeth Nationale Park

ʼn Park vernoem na ʼn persoon wat nog net een keer daar was? Die QENP is ʼn pragtige park wat grens aan die die Edwardmeer. In sekere dele van die Park is daar leeus wat boom klim. Verder, langs die Kazingakanaal is daar volop seekoeie, krokodille en olifante, asook ʼn oorvloed van voëls.

The Queen Elizabeth National Park

A park named after a person who only visited the place once? The QENP is a beautiful park, bordering Lake Edward. In certain areas of the Park the tree climbing lions are to be found. Along the Kazinga Channel hippo, crocodile, elephant and various other animal species, as well as bird life in abundance are to be found.

Adrenalien stormloop by Jinja

Jinja in Uganda, by die oorsprong van die Nyl, is vinnig besig om te ontwikkel tot die ware avontuur hoofstad van die vasteland. Afgesien van bungi en witwaterroei is daar ook die geleentheid om vis te vang in die Victoriameer, of om te ontspan op die oewer van die magtige rivier.

Adrenalin rush at Jinja

Jinja in Uganda, close to the source of the Nile, is fast developing into the adventure capital of the continent. This is the place for white water river rafting, bunji jumping and fishing on Lake Victoria. The alternative is just to relax on the banks of the mighty river.

Verder na Kenia

Kenia was vir dekades lank die juweel in die Britse koloniale kroon. Vandag is die hoofstad, Nairobi, ʼn modern stad. Dis ʼn plek vir die Voetsporemanne om, halfpad deur hulle reis, voorrade aan te vul en ook ander safarigangers te ontmoet.

Into Kenya

Kenya used to be the jewel in die British colonial crown. Today the capital, Nairobi, is a modern city and offers the Voetspore team the opportunity to replenish supplies, half way through their journey, and to meet other travelers who are on the same mission.

Afrika se tweede hoogste

Berg Kenia bied ʼn ernstige uitdaging aan ʼn span wat nou reeds bykans twee maande op die pad is. Hulle probeer die aanslag op Point Lenana makliker maak deur halfpad die berg uit te ry. Dit was waarskynlik ʼn oordeelsfout en die kruin van die 4 985 meter hoë piek word ‘n ernstige uitdaging.

Africa’s second highest

Mount Kenya offers a serious challenge to a team who had been travelling for nearly two months. They try and make it easier by driving half way up the mountain. This was probably the wrong decision, as the team struggles to reach the 4 985 meter high summit at Point Lenana.

Die ongenaakbare Chalbi

Die Chalbiwoestyn bied onder normale omstandighede ʼn ernstige uitdaging aan enige reisiger. Dis ʼn ongenaakbare wêreld. Om sake te kompliseer het dit vir die eerste keer in bykans vyf jaar in die woestyn gereën. Dis amper onmoontlik om die Chalbi te kruis en die span word voor een van sy ernstigste uitdagings gestel.

The inaccessible Chalbi

Under normal circumstances the Chalbi Desert is a serious challenge for travelers. This is an inaccessible desert. To complicate matters the desert received its first rainfall in nearly 5 years, two weeks before the team’s arrival. It becomes nearly impossible to cross the Chalbi and the team is faced by one of their most serious challenges.

Sibiloi langs die Turkanameer

Die Sibiloi Nasionale Park is in een van die verste uithoeke van Kenia. Dis ʼn dorre, droë wêreld. Die Park is geleë aan die Turkanameer, voorheen bekend as die Jade Sea. Dis een van Afrika se Groot Skeurvallei se mooiste mere en die plek waar Richard Leaky van sy belangrikste argeologiese opgrawings gedoen het.

Sibiloi adjacent to Lake Turkana

The Sibiloi National Park is located in a remote corner of Kenya. It is a dry, hot and inhospitable place. The Park is situated adjacent to Lake Turkana, previously known as the Jade Sea. This is one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the place where Richard Leaky made some of his most significant archeological discoveries.

Ernstige moeilik in die wildernis

Hierdie week loop die Voetsporespan sy rieme styf. Vir eers word die span teruggestuur uit die Omovallei in Ethiopië weens gebrekkige dokumentasie en daarna breek een van die voertuie. Dit beteken dat die voertuig vir meer as 700 km agter op ʼn vragmotor vervoer moet word oor van die mees uitdagende terrein op die vasteland.

 

Serious trouble in the wilderness

This week the team runs into serious trouble. First they are turned back in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia because of insufficient documentation, and then one of the vehicles broke down. This implies a 700 km journey on the back of a truck through the most challenging terrain on the continent.

Lang wag voor die reis noord

Die span is terug in Nanyuki op die ewenaar in Kenia. Die voertuig word reggemaak en daar word gewag vir nuwe visums wat in Suid Afrika uitgereik moes word. Dit word ʼn lang wag. Uiteindelik kan die span die reis noord aandurf. Dit sluit in die roete van Marsabit na Moyale – die slegste pad op die Afrika vasteland.

Long wait before the journey north

The team is back in Nanyuki in Kenya. The vehicle gets fixed and the team waits for new visas that had to be issued in Pretoria and then couriered to Kenya. It becomes a long wait. Eventually the team gets going and travels north. The journey includes the route from Marsabit to Moyale – the worst road on the African continent.

Van Addis na die Hooglande

Vanaf Addis Abeba, hoofstad van Ethiopië, reis die span oor Dessi, al op die platorand van die Ethiopiese Hooglande. Dis die een bergpas na die ander. Dis skouspelagtige terrein.

From Addis to the Highlands

The team leaves Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, and travels past Dessi, all along the escarpment of the Ethiopian Highlands. The one mountain pass after the other. This is spectacular terrain.

Die Verbondsark in Aksum

Volgens legende het die Koningin van Skeba vir Koning Salomo ʼn kind gebaar. Die kind se naam was Menelik en hy het duisende jare gelde daarvoor gesorg dat die Ark van die Verbond, met die twee tablette wat Moses van Berg Sinai gebring het, Ethiopië toe gekom het. Die Ark word tans in Aksum bewaar. Die span word deel van ʼn prosessie van sowat 2000 mense wat die teenwoordigheid van die Ark in Aksum vier.

According to legend the Queen of Sheba bore a son for King Solomon. The son, Menelik, was responsible for bringing the Arc of the Covenant, containing the two tablets that Moses brought from Mount Sinai, to Ethiopia. This Arc is currently in safe keeping in Aksum and the team together with 2 000 pilgrims celebrated the presence of the Arc in Aksum.

ʼn Kruising na die Nubiese Woestyn

Na ʼn lang ruk in die Hooglande van Ethiopië is die Nubiese woestyn in Soedan dramatiese verskillende terrein. Die span besoek Port Sudan, gaan snorkel in die Rooi See, en slaap snags onder die sterrehemel in die Woestyn.

A crossing to the Nubian Desert

After the Highlands of Ethiopia, the Nubian Desert in Sudan offers dramatically different terrain. The team visits Port Sudan, snorkels in the Red Sea, and camps every night in the desert under the open sky.

Vanaf Wadi Halfa met ʼn veerboot

Wadi Halfa is die enigste grenskruising van Soedan na Egipte en die kruising word een keer per week per veerboot gedoen. Die span ontmoet talle ander reisigers in die stowwerige klein dorpie op die suidelike punt van die Aswan dam en kruis dan die grens met ʼn daglange vaart na Egipte. Die voertuie word agter gelaat en sal eers later verskeep word.

From Wadi Halfa with a ferry

Wadi Halfa is the only possible border crossing between Sudan and Egypt. This crossing is done once a week by ferry. The team meets many other travelers in the dusty little town on the southern shores of the Aswan Dam and then crosses into Egypt on a one day voyage. The vehicles are left behind and will only be sent later on.

By Aswan aan die Nyl

By die pragtige dorp op die oewer van die Nyl wag die span vir hulle voertuie om te arriveer. Die tyd word verwyl deur die Medina te besoek, met ʼn faluka op die Nyl te vaar en net in die algemeen te ontspan en te wag.

At Aswan on the Nile

The team waits for the vehicles to arrive at this beautiful town on the banks of the Nile. The time is spent by visiting the market, sailing on the Nile with a faluka and just relaxing in general.

Die fabelagtige Wit Woestyn

Nadat die voertuie arriveer kan die manne verder. Dis nie ʼn reis al langs die Nyl na Kaïro nie, nee, eerder ʼn wye draai deur die Sahara. Die span besoek ʼn aantal oases en gaan kamp dan in die fabelagtige Wit Woestyn met sy unieke kalksteen formasies wat deur die eeu soos standbeelde gevorm is.

The fabulous White Desert

After receiving the vehicles, the team departs. This time it is not a journey along the Nile to Cairo. The team decides rather to travel through the Sahara. At first they visit a number of oases and then camp in the fabulous White Desert with its unique chalk formations that were sculptured by wind erosion over thousands of years.

ʼn Reis eindig in Alexandria

Na bykans 20 000 km en 100 dae kom die span in Alexandria by die Middellandse see aan. Dit was reeds die sewende Voetsporereis wat die manne afgelê het. Elke reis het sy eie uitdagings, maar hierdie een het net weer  getoon watter verskeidenheid en avontuur ʼn transkontinentale reis in Afrika bied.

A journey ends in Alexandria.

After 20 000 km and 100 days of travelling the team arrives at Alexandria on the Mediterranean. This is the completion of the seventh Voetspore adventure. Each expedition has its own challenges, but this one once more proved that a transcontinental journey in Africa offers variety and adventure.
